Monotypes

Picture
Ricarda in Repose, Monotype on Hahnemuhle paper, 38cms x 28cms, 2024
Ricarda in Repose was quickly drawn from life and transferred to a nearby printing press to be embedded in paper.  I was fascinated by the way the figure's body weight was received by the deck chair and I pushed the ink around on the plate as my body weight empathised with Ricarda's.

Turning, Monotype on Somerset Paper, Framed 86cms x 66.5cms, 2025
Turning expresses what it’s like to merge with space. The ink swirls and stains the paper with marks that depict a range of speeds and pressures. As the dancer manipulates the torsion and weight of her own body to create physical and psychological momentum, she activates space. The printmaker also uses her body weight and the press to activate a surface and bring an image to light.

Ink and Impulse, Monotype on Somerset Paper, 76cms x 56cms , 2025
The female figure in Ink and Impulse is revelling in the introspective feeling of torsion in her body. Inspired by one of Honore Daumier's line drawings, the figure's upper body winds up in opposition to her legs. She awaits a physical and emotional release that will propel her into another whole of body gesture, which is reflected in my viscous inky marks that reference her speed and movement in space.

Medusa's Daughter, 29cms x 21cms, Monotype on Hahnemuhle paper, 2024
This monotype was drawn quickly from life. The gaze of the model as it met the head of the serpent prop became an animated drama even though the pose was still. My gestures with rag and brush manipulated the thick blue ink on a smooth perspex plate which was then run through the nearby etching press.
